Prop Firm Rules Traders Should Check

News trading

Whether you can trade news on a funded account depends on the firm, and the answer is rarely a simple yes or no. Some firms allow it freely, some restrict trading for a few minutes around big releases, and some only restrict it once you are funded. This guide covers the news rules worth checking before you buy an evaluation, how a sudden spike meets your drawdown limits, and how news trading works on Fundex24.

Can you trade news on a funded account?

Across the industry there are three common approaches. The first allows news trading without any special rule. The second restricts it around high-impact releases, usually by blocking new positions, or sometimes closing positions, within a set number of minutes before and after the event. The third allows news trading during the evaluation but restricts it on the funded account, which is exactly when it starts to matter.

At Fundex24, news trading is allowed. That does not make a release safe, though. The same limits apply during a spike as on a quiet afternoon, and a single candle can use up a day’s room. If the evaluation itself is new to you, what a prop firm challenge is covers the structure first.

The news rules to check before you buy

If a firm restricts news trading, the details decide whether the rule fits your style. Look for four things in the rule page, not in the marketing:

Which events count. Which economic calendar the firm uses, and which impact level triggers the rule.

The time window. How many minutes before and after a release the restriction applies.

What is restricted. Opening positions, closing them, holding them through the event, or all three.

The consequence. Whether a breach only voids the profit from that trade or fails the whole account.

A news rule is only as clear as its four details.

Also check whether the rule is the same in the evaluation and on the funded account. A strategy that passes the evaluation on news days and then becomes restricted afterwards is a strategy you will have to change at the worst possible time.

How a news spike meets your drawdown limits

At Fundex24 the daily drawdown limit is 5% of the day’s starting balance, which is $500 on a day that starts at $10,000, and the maximum drawdown is 10% of the initial balance, fixed at $9,000 on that account. Both balance and equity are monitored, so an open position that swings against you during a release counts as it moves, not only when you close it.

Four numbers to know before any release.

Fast markets add one more risk: in any market, a stop can fill beyond its level when the price jumps. Plan for that by sizing news trades smaller than usual, for example half your normal risk, so that a worse fill still fits comfortably inside the day’s room. Never widen a stop after the release has started; that is how a planned loss becomes a breached limit. How the two limits are measured is compared in daily drawdown vs max loss, and the wider habits are covered in crypto prop trading risk management.

Straddles, stacking and the single-position rule

A straddle counts as hedging. Some news traders open a buy and a sell just before a release and close whichever side loses. At Fundex24, holding opposing positions is allowed only with at least 15 minutes between them, so a straddle opened in the minutes before an event does not fit the rules. All positions also use isolated margin.

Stacking is the second trap. On a funded account, the combined open risk of all positions must stay within 3% of the day’s starting balance, or that day’s profit is not counted. On $10,000 that is $300 of combined risk, which several positions into the same release can reach quickly.

The third is the single-position rule. If one position makes 60% or more of the stage target, its profit is not counted toward that target. A lucky release that delivers $800 on a $1,000 stage 1 target does not finish the stage, because a single position at 60% or more of the target does not count toward it. News trading can be part of a strategy, but it cannot be a shortcut through the evaluation. Traders who hold several fast positions on news days will also find the habits in scalping and day trading accounts useful.

Trading news on Fundex24

Because news trading is allowed, the decision is yours before every release: stand aside, trade at reduced size, or wait for the first move to settle and trade the reaction. Whichever you choose, set the risk in dollars before the event, not during it. Crypto reacts to scheduled macro data such as inflation reports and rate decisions, as well as to unscheduled headlines, and the stocks, ETFs and commodities in the Fundex24 terminal react to the same calendar; gold is a good example, covered in choosing a funded account for gold.

The free practice account is a good place to watch a release without risking an evaluation: $10,000 in virtual funds for a short run, currently 3 days, with leverage up to 1:10 and up to three resets. Plans are on the challenges page, every condition, including the list of prohibited trading behaviours, is on the rules page, and the challenge support team can answer questions about a specific approach.

Frequently asked questions

Is news trading allowed on Fundex24?

Yes. The same drawdown limits apply during a release, and balance and equity are both monitored as the price moves.

Does news trading work differently on a funded account?

The limits are the same, and the funded account adds one more: the combined open risk of all positions must stay within 3% of the day’s starting balance, or that day’s profit is not counted.

Can I open a buy and a sell before a release?

Only with at least 15 minutes between them. Holding opposing positions is hedging, and the 15-minute gap applies.

Does one big news win pass the challenge?

Not on its own. If a single position makes 60% or more of the stage target, that profit is not counted toward the target.

What if the price jumps through my stop?

The loss counts toward the limits like any other.
