Can You Trade Gold on Weekends? XAU/USDT Runs 24/7, but There’s a Catch

Saturday gold traded 7% of a weekday's volume and moved 0.25% on average. What that means for stops, valid days and holding a position...

You can trade gold on weekends, just not on the market most people have in mind. COMEX gold futures in New York stop at 5 p.m. Eastern on Friday and reopen at 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, and the global spot market is shut over the weekend too. The XAU/USDT perpetual on Binance, the price Fundex24’s terminal follows, keeps trading every hour in between. The catch is in the numbers: over the last two months a weekend day traded about a tenth of a weekday’s volume, and the real market comes back all at once on Sunday evening.

Gold’s weekend timetable, in UTC

Here is what’s open when, in UTC. The futures times shift by an hour when US daylight saving time ends on 1 November 2026.

  • COMEX gold futures close on Friday at 21:00 UTC (22:00 UTC from 1 November).
  • They reopen on Sunday at 22:00 UTC (23:00 UTC from 1 November), which leaves 49 hours without a futures price.
  • The XAU/USDT perpetual never closes: it trades every hour of the week, Saturday and Sunday included.
  • On Fundex24, XAU/USDT is open to every challenge and funded account, long or short, at up to 1:10, with prices that follow Binance.
Fundex24 market list searched for XAU, showing XAU/USDT labelled Gold and XAUT/USDT labelled Tether Gold under the All, Crypto, Stocks, ETFs and Commodities tabs
Search XAU and two results come up: XAU/USDT, the gold contract this article is about, and Tether Gold (XAUT/USDT), a separate token.

XAU/USDT is a perpetual futures contract on the price of gold, margined and settled in USDT, with no expiry date. You trade the price; you don’t own any metal. Our guide to stocks and commodities on a prop account shows where gold sits among the other non-crypto markets.

What 61 days of XAU/USDT data say about weekend gold

We took Binance’s hourly XAU/USDT candles from 18 August to 17 October 2026, 61 full UTC days, and split them into weekdays and weekend days. Three things stand out.

  • Volume collapses. An average Saturday traded 7% of an average weekday’s volume and an average Sunday 15%, about 40% of that in the two hours after the evening reopen. Taken together, a weekend day came to about a tenth of a weekday.
  • The price barely moves. The average weekday covered 2.10% from low to high; the average Saturday covered 0.25% and the average Sunday 0.58%.
  • The closed hours are almost empty. The 49 hours from Friday 21:00 to Sunday 22:00 UTC make up 29% of the week but carried 3.2% of its volume. An average hour in that window moved about a sixth as far as an hour in the rest of the week.
Bar chart of the average daily range of XAU/USDT for each day of the week from mid-August to mid-October 2026, with Saturday and Sunday far below the weekdays
Wednesday was the busiest day on average; Saturday moved about a tenth as far as Wednesday.

One practical consequence: the 1.6% average daily range you’ll see quoted for gold over the last 60 days includes the weekends. On the days the main market is open, the figure is closer to 2.1%, so a stop sized from the blended number is tighter than it looks on a Tuesday.

Thin doesn’t mean frozen, though. On Saturday 17 October the hour from 21:00 UTC moved 0.31%, six times an ordinary Saturday hour, on a fraction of normal weekday volume. Weekend gold can lurch, and there are few orders around to cushion it.

The Sunday-evening reopen: how big is the gap?

The real market returns in a single hour. In our sample the 22:00 UTC hour on Sunday, 6 p.m. in New York, traded about fifteen times the volume of an average Saturday hour, and its range was nearly eight times as wide, at 0.38%.

The gap itself has been smaller than the word suggests. Across the eight weekends we measured, XAU/USDT drifted 0.16% on average between the Friday close at 21:00 UTC and the Sunday reopen, and never more than 0.31%. In the first three hours after the reopen it covered 0.72% on average, and 1.22% at most, on the evening of 27 September.

Taken on Sunday 18 October around midday UTC: the day’s candle at the right edge is barely more than a line next to the weekday bars.

That’s the honest picture: over these eight weekends, the gap in gold has been modest. The risk sits in the weekends that aren’t quiet. If something big breaks while New York is shut, the perpetual is the only place pricing it, on a tenth of the usual volume, and it has to line up with the real market when futures reopen. A stop protects you only at prices that actually trade; if the price jumps past your level, you’re filled at the first price after the jump.

Sizing a weekend gold position on a $6,000 challenge

The $6,000 challenge has a $300 daily loss limit, a maximum-loss floor at $5,400 and a $600 Step 1 target. Here is the same $45 risk, 0.75% of the account, sized two ways on the XAU/USDT trade page.

  • Weekday trade: a stop 0.8% from entry, well inside gold’s average weekday range. $45 ÷ 0.8% = a $5,625 position, which takes $562.50 of margin at 1:10.
  • Weekend hold: a stop 1.5% away, beyond every reopen swing in our sample. $45 ÷ 1.5% = a $3,000 position and $300 of margin.
  • Gold’s widest day in the last 60 days covered 4.63% (19 August, a Wednesday). Without a stop, the bigger position would lose about $260 on a move that size, 87% of the daily limit; the smaller one about $139.
  • As a stress test, take a gap twice the worst reopen we saw: 2.44%. That costs the bigger position about $137 and the smaller one about $73.

A stress test, not a forecast: the weekend-sized position takes the worst case with more than half the day’s room to spare.

The challenge rules don’t treat Saturday differently from Tuesday. The same 5% daily loss and 10% floor apply, and a loss still open at the daily reset counts against the new day: carry a gold long into Sunday $90 under water and you start Sunday with $210 of room, not $300. Since 16 October 2026 the opposite case is gentler. Profit that was open at the reset and then fades no longer counts as a daily loss, because each day starts from the closed balance. Our piece on daily drawdown and max loss walks through both lines.

Weekends are also a poor place to collect valid trading days. On $6,000 a valid day needs a closed trade netting at least $15, profit or loss. If Saturday moves its average 0.25% and you catch half of it, you’d need a $12,000 position to make $15, more than twice the weekday size above.

On a funded account one more rule matters. If you open a position while the total risk of your open positions is above 3% of the starting balance ($180 on $6,000), that position’s profit is left out of the payout. A position with no stop counts its whole margin as risk, so if you held the $3,000 weekend position without its stop, its $300 of margin alone would put every trade you add on top of it in that zone. The order still goes through; the profit just won’t count.

Three ways to trade gold on weekends without getting gapped

  1. Be flat by Friday 21:00 UTC (22:00 from 1 November). Nothing open means nothing to gap, and in our sample you’d have missed very little.
  2. If you hold, hold smaller and with a stop. Size it so a move twice the worst reopen you know of still fits inside the day’s room.
  3. If you trade on Saturday, expect small moves and set targets to match. The temptation on a 0.25% day is to add size until the move feels worth it, and that’s the habit a Sunday gap punishes.

Gold traders on Fundex24 already use stops more than most. Over the last 90 days, 92.2% of gold positions on paid accounts had a stop loss, against 75.9% across all markets. They also trade big: gold ranked 7th by number of traders over the last 30 days but 3rd by traded volume, after BTC and ETH. Big positions are exactly what make a weekend gap expensive. If you’re choosing an account mainly for gold, our guide to a funded account for XAUUSD covers what to look for.

For keeping an eye on a position over the weekend, a phone is enough. The site installs as a web app: on iPhone, open it in Safari, tap Share, choose Add to Home Screen and tap Add; on Android, use Chrome and the install button (Install app in the footer, or the banner on mobile). It then opens full screen from your home screen, with nothing to download from an app store.

If you’d rather watch a weekend for yourself before risking a fee, start the free practice account on a Friday: its three days cover Saturday and Sunday, with $10,000 of virtual money, up to 1:10 and three resets. It opens when you sign up. After that, the $6,000 challenge costs $59, and that fee is your maximum loss. The full challenge rules list every limit by account size.

Risk note: gold perpetuals are leveraged, and a gap can move straight through a stop. Most challenge accounts fail and funded accounts are simulated. This is market data and arithmetic, not a forecast or investment advice.

Weekend gold: questions traders ask

Is the gold market open on Saturday?

COMEX gold futures and the global spot market are closed on Saturday. The XAU/USDT perpetual trades all day, but on an average Saturday it traded 7% of a weekday’s volume.

What time does gold open on Sunday?

COMEX gold futures reopen at 6 p.m. New York time on Sunday: 22:00 UTC until 1 November 2026, then 23:00 UTC. XAU/USDT doesn’t reopen because it never closed, but its volume jumps in that hour.

Is gold more volatile on weekends?

Usually the opposite. In our data an average weekend hour moved less than a fifth as much as a weekday hour; the risk is a sudden move on thin volume and the catch-up at the Sunday reopen.

Can I hold a gold position over the weekend on a prop challenge?

On Fundex24, yes; the rules don’t distinguish weekends. The daily loss and maximum loss apply every day, and a loss still open at the daily reset counts against the next day’s limit.

What is the difference between XAU/USDT and XAUT/USDT?

XAU/USDT is a perpetual futures contract on the gold price. XAUT/USDT is a pair for Tether Gold, a separate token, and it trades at its own price.
